Bio
Drew Wann grew up an hour outside Washington, D.C.; this provided a diversity of environments that inspired organic and architectural ways of seeing and thinking. His work blends playful abstraction with emotional symbolism, drawing inspiration from fashion, architecture, found objects, and everyday observation. This sparked curiosity and a connection to seek new conventions, which led him to pursue a BFA in Communication Arts at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. Now a visual artist exploring the relationship between memory, movement, and human connection through illustration, photography, and design.
Artist Statement
Referencing Expressionism, Impressionism, and Surrealism to lean into what is perceived and undergone by a human. Human dynamics are abstract and often breach realism physically and artistically. Tones of solitude, memory, and remorse play into the subjects and compositions of my works. Harmony is then found through artistic freedom, evoked emotion, irrationalism, and spontaneity, connecting visual and contextual motifs. The suggestions and forms are inspired by the human form and the dynamism the body endures, whether by itself or by its place in the world. They narrate the energies that flow, making up existence, evoking both social and spiritual responses in the viewer.
